Research and planning - WHAT MAKES A GOOD SHORT FILM?

SOME SHORT FILMS I LIKE THE BLACK HOLE

i enjoy the comedy used within this film, i feel they have used overexadurated expressions to make this funny as there is no dialogue used within this film. this short portrays curiousity also what people would do when know one is watching or they had a special power. the ending of the short shows a sense of karma. GOODBYE TO THE NORMALS

this short film uses comedy to show children and how they can grow up fast, the child used looks young and vunerable but acts mature. the ending of the short where it looks like he is running back shows the parents thinking he would never go through with it shows a comedy twist when he just forgets his passport. THE LIFE AND DEATH OF A PUMPKIN

i like this short as it is shown by apumkin telling its story at halloween. it is funny as it is a tradition carving a pumkin but this is halloween form the pumpkins point of view. and all the points in the story are true. RULES OF A SHORT FILM

IM HERE I'm Here is a 30 minute short film, love story about the relationship between two robots living in L.A. where both humans and robots exist. the film was used as a promotion for absolut vodka with the slogan "a love story in an absolut world". the film is set in modern everyday L.A with the exception of the existence of robots which fit in with the everyday routine. the main character Sheldon who works in a library, just blends in with the background getting ignored by others. until one day he meets Francesca a female robot who catches his attention by breaking the rules. the robots then start dating when Francesca asked Sheldon about his dreams he thought it was impossible for a robot to do so. they then go to a gig where Francesca loses her arm in which Sheldon replaces it with his. the following day she loses a leg which he replaces as he said he saw it in his dream. Sheldon then gets a call to the hospital where Francesca is torn in two in which he decides to give her his body. spike jonze has shown euphoria of love with the use of music the message that i feel this film shows is that love can become a deep and painful cost. its surprising that such deep messages and emotions can be shown through animated characters such as robots. GEORGE LUCAS IN LOVE

george lucas in love is an 8 minute short which has elements creating a parody using characters and story line from both star wars and shakespeare in love. george lucas is creating a script for a space tragidy film, and is only days away from graduating his enemy who links closely to star wars characters taunts him with his finished piece. he finally gets inspiration from his love who encourages him the write his script. this film has comedy elements without being to jokey.the poster and film of george lucas in love seems to be alot more low budget in comparison to spike jonzes' im here.

ACROSS THE HALL

comparisons between mainstream and short film FILM POSTERS the film poster for the feature length film is much more glossy using airbrushing and photoshop merging the images together. i feel that this poster is selling the stars more than the film, as closeups of the actors have been used rather than shots relating to the film. from the poster it is difficult to tell which genre the film is from. the poster for the short film is much less glamorous with the images being shots from the film giving a more grainy effect giving authenticity to the poster. also the image at the bottom creates an enigma giving the audience an idea of which genre the film is. SHORT FILM TRAILER

Across the Hall (Short Film) Trailer from Gary Gimelfarb on Vimeo.

the trailer for the short film across the hall has a more amateur feel to it, the use of cuts and fade to black make pace to the trailer. there is a lot on tension and mystery as the trailer doesn't give to much of the film away.

FEATURE FILM TRAILER

Across The Hall Feature Film Trailer from Gary Gimelfarb on Vimeo.

the trailer for the feature film is much more dramatic with the use of a narrator i think this makes the trailer seem less tense also it gives away some main features in the film. although the use of sounds with the cuts creates a much faster pace.

Research and planning - NARRATIVE IDEAS

the shark model is a contemporary narrative theory unlike todorov's traditional approach. the theory has 3 parts the bite, the body and the tail. the bite is the beginning where something dramatic happens creating an impact. it begins with an eventful scene to grabs the audiences attention. the middle part of the film is the body this is where the story unfolds creating twists. the story has then developed with characters causes and effects. the ending of the film is then the tail where the plot ends and the story is resolved.

films that use shark bite openings include;

creep

the decent

the hangover.

Research and planning - UNCLEAR NARRATIVE STRUCTURE

starts with a summer day in the 60's on a farm in the countryside with a family of a farmer his wife and two children. one day the children go into the woods and get kidnapped in which the farmer is dearly upset and the farm begins to decline. a few months later his wife runs away. from then the farmer has a breakdown. years and years his anger is built up inside and doesn't leave the farm again.
years pass and its now the 00's as you see him sitting at home looking back at the past you here the shouting of people. as the farmer has not heard anyone in the woods for years he decides he doesn't want people in his land because of his past.

this then shows the group of people in woods and that they set up camp and start drinking. there are 5 teenagers on a road trip drinking and setting up fire until one girl is upset and walks off into the forest the drunken boy then goes after her in which he stubbles into the corn field and attacked by the farmer. unbeknown to the rest of them them another boy goes out looking for them who then gets attacked too. in the mean time the 1st girl stumbles across the abandoned farm in which she goes inside to shelter as it starts raining. when inside she realises the farm isn't abandoned after all.

whilst looking around she heres the door slam down stairs where she sees the farmer with one of her unconscious friends she thought he must of been helping until he started torturing him. as the farmer left again she tried to get out but it was locked.

just then he brings in another friend and does the same sort of thing as she is hiding in a cupboard. back at the camp the couple snuggle up in a tent at the rain beats down until they hear noises thinking its the others back but its the farmer slashes the tent then kills them. as the farmer returns home she trys to sneak out but he notices her and chases her until she reaches the car and gets in as the car doesn't start he trys to smash it until she starts it runs him out the way and trys to drive home from then she lived a depressed life and again had a break down that story was then being told by her in a mental hospital.

Research and planning - CLEAR NARRATIVE STRUCTURE

5 teenagers from college in America, 3 girls and 2 boys decide to go on a road trip. they decide to go and camp some woods just out of town which is completely desolate apart from the abandoned farm just down the road. they park there car on the long empty road they wade there way through the crop field and deep into the woods. when in the woods they set up camp, lighting a fire and start drinking. until one of the boys goes two far upsetting one of the girls as she wanders off into the woods. the camera then shows the once thought abandoned farm where there is a farmer in a dim lit room. which he then hears the noise of people in the woods in which he finds the drunk boy hits him and takes him back to the farm. meanwhile the lost girl stumbles across the farm goes inside in which the farmer returns home with her friends torturing him and killing him. trying to escape the farmer comes back with another victim another of her friends. it then cuts to him attacking the two remaining teenagers. as she trys to escape he chases her to the car trying to get her as she drives off.

Research and planning - NarratNARRATIVE FILM POSTERS

the film poster for edward scissorhands shows the two main characters, the image shows that there is a special bond between the two hcaracters. as the character of edward seems scary with the use of costume the way he is portrayed wiht the use of body language shows he is gentle and caring. the film seems to be set in an almost fantays world as edward isnt a normal human being although the connection between him and the girl connotes a real life situation of love and understanding. there is no real indicaion of when the film is set as the setting of the film is unnatural fanasy world although the appearance of the girl shows the film isnt present fromthe way in which she is dressed. the enigma of the film which can be given away by the poster is a romance between the two main characters although from the appearance and first impressions of edward others may be scared or put off by him, in which he cant be accepted into normal life. from the cconventions of the edward scissorhands poster the genre which i feel is shown is both fantasy and romance. from just looking at edward people may think that this film is actually a horror but is infact the total opposite.

the film poster for this is england shows as gang of skinheads which connotes that they are the main focus of the film. this group of friends show that they are skinheads by the way they are dressed and there body language. they are aged around 15-20 with originality dressing different from most people.

this film seems to be set in a middle or lower class areas with the use of tower block housing estates and the corrigated iron behind them gives them a rough edge and shows a more lower class approach.

the film is set in the 80's as the poster states 'summer 83, a time to stand out form the crowd' also this was the time of skinheads and ska music which can be shown from stereotyping the characters by bpdy language and clothing.

the engima of the film shows that there may be fighting or rivaly between people this is shown by the way in which they are stood they seem to be a gang and have attitude. also the time in which it was set shows there may be issues with racisim and the bnp, it is showing britishness and the issues at that time.

from the codes and conventions of the poster the film genre looks as though it is a drama.

the film poster for grown ups shows exactly who the film is about, it shows a group of adults having fun and almost look like they are behaving like children which acts with the title of the film 'grown ups' as though its a play on words that they are actually grown up but nothing has seemed to change from when they were younger. the image shows a group of 5 friends which connotes that these are the main characters of the film. the fact they are on a water slide shows they are having fun as well as the slogan ' boys will be boys, some longer than others'.

the picture has been taken in a water park this shows that the film is set in present times also in a hot country which has water parks, which is most likely to be america as the main actors are all american.

it is mostly likely to be set in the present as the set seems very modern. also the weather in the picture looks hot therefore this connotes it is set in the summer, possibly in the summer holidays.

from looking at the film poster the enigma that is possible to occur is that the group of friends are to meet up in the holiday after not seeing each other for years in which they act like they did when they were younger, as it comes to the end of the holidays they have to go back to there everyday lives.

from looking at conventions and narrative of the poster the genre the film is mostly likely to be is comedy this is from the actors used are stereotypical comedy actors and the image shows the character laughing and having fun.

Research and planning - GENRE

film genre refers to the method based on similarities in narrative elements from which films are constructed. most genres are based on those from literary genre in which there is great debate of categorizing genres. fictional films are usually genre categorized according to there setting, theme topic, mood, format or target audience. genres can also branch of into sub genres which can also be combined creating hybrid genres such as romantic comedies. Hybrid Genre hybrid genres are genres which don't sit into a specific category of genre, these could be a combination of 2 or more genres. the reason for hybrid genres is that they are much more original and have larger target audience attracting more viewers

A good example of this type of film is Alien, classified as a horror/science fiction or . Such films are often more memorable than films which rest in a particular classic genre type. Hybrids are often perceived as ground braking or revolutionary, or indeed more original. Horror typical codes and conventions which are related with horror films are that they are unsettling films designed to panic and cause dread to the audience this is done by the use sound which includes intense music and sharp sound effects. typical iconography of horrors are blood, knives and general objects that people fear. they are often set in a remote area places like woods and derelict buildings this gives the audience a sense of helplessness. lastly character roles in horrors often include lead characters/ hero who survives, the killer who has a specific characteristic in the way they kill and a heroin who is usually killed. Forgetting Sarah Marshall - romantic comedy forgetting Sarah Marshall is recognizable as a romantic comedy mainly through the characters used as there are the two sets of main characters who both have romantic story lines. which include humerus male characters and pretty women. they are also modern day story lines in which the audience can relate to and is set on a holiday location where as anything can happen on holiday. music used is up beat and modern which helps to link to its target audience. the film is mainly funny in terms of awkwardness between the main characters.
